Structures for Shakes, Glacier/wind/earthquake Observations, and BUDDIES (out of order)!

We enjoyed reading with our buddies! In science, we read about Agents of Change and created a list of processes that can cause rocks  to break apart, rocks to move, and rocks to be deposited. We carried out investigations, using models, to show that wind, glaciers, and earthquakes can cause rock structures to break apart and move. Earlier in the week, we designed a model building (with more tape than we should've used) that will experience minimal effects from shaking. We carried out an investigation to test the models and its component structures during the simulated earthquakes. All of our model buildings survived the earthquakes. Note for next year... we will limit the amount of tape. LOL! We love Celebration Sticker Time! Kids share something that they are proud of (something they learned, pushed through, or got better at) with Mrs. C. Then, they get to pick a sticker! Congratulations to our Kindness Award Winner. The Grit award winner was not at school during award time....

Eleven, Structures, and Teamwork!

We started our morning with a fun game called "Eleven." The kids work in groups of 3 or 4. One person in the group says go and everyone holds up 1-5 fingers. The goal is to get exactly 11. Way to go, Cacioppo Crew! In LMC, we did a scavenger hunt! We learned how to use Destiny Discover to find book titles and locations in the library! We worked together in small groups to creatively represent "100." The kids could use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parenthesis. It was great to see our minds come together! In Science, we read about different structures for buildings to withstand a small earthquake. We will use this information as we design our own models. We learned about the prefixes pre-, mis-, and dis-. The kids worked with table partners to create lists of words that have the given prefixes. We learned that not all words that begin with the spellings are considered prefixes. In order for it to be a prefix, there needs to be a base word afte...
