Westward Expansion, Adding Fractions, and BMX Anti-Bullying Assembly!

Share Something Great is a weekly opportunity for students to share talents, items from home, things that they are doing outside of school, and more! It is a great opportunity for students to make connections and learn from one another. Matt Wilhelm came to Kipling to talk about the importance of standing up for others when they need a voice and working hard and not giving up. We have been working on team building activities that require us to work together to reach a common goal. Earlier in the week, we attempted to count to 12 randomly without two students saying the same number. After some time, we finally did it!  We realized that when we do that, we have to take turns and refrain from the impulse to say more than one number in the set. It was hard for us! In this activity, we passed marbles on a plate around the circle. We made up different challenges with flimsy and sturdy plates and using your non-dominant hand.  We realized that we have to be patient and work tog...

Equivalent and Comparing Fractions... and MORE!

Image
We created our own fractions and compared with our shoulder partners. Then, we used our strategies to determine if the fraction is less than a 1/2, equal to 1/2, or greater than 1/2 to place them on our class number line.  Our leader of the week is sharing her poster! We played different fraction games to make equivalent fractions and to compare fractions. Comparing fractions with different denominators was one of our challenging skills.  We practiced a different way by playing fraction war. We learned how to find a common denominator and then compare the fractions.  This will help us in our next few fraction chapters as we add and subtract fractions. In Social Studies, we are learning how to tell the story of the history of Illinois. This week we listening to several different stories passed down from the Indigenous People that lived in our region. We used a story board to help retell the events. Many of the stories share how the people of that time depended on the land....

Equivalent Fractions, Timelines, and Early Life in Illinois

Image
We used fraction towers to explore and help us understand equivalent fractions. We made observations and connections and we created different fractions. We played some fraction games to help us show mastery with equivalent fractions. This week we used multiplication and division to create equivalent fractions. We learned that we have to multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to create an equivalent fraction. When we use division to create equivalent fractions, we have to determine a common factor for both the numerator and the denominator and then divide both the top and bottom number by the common factor to create an equivalent fraction. The kids are catching on! Mrs. Thurman showed us where new spotlight books are located in the LMC. We made observations as we compared and contrasted two different timelines for Illinois history. We discovered that one gave more details for a given topic, while the other timeline provided less information, but more events. We l...
